Paula’s research is located at the intersection of health, aging and place. As a community-based public health researcher, communities, and in particular neighbourhoods and university campuses, are the living labs for her research.
In her work as a social gerontologist and qualitative health researcher, Paula explores aging from a critical perspective to challenge assumptions about aging and disability, re-imagine practices and policies in community and care settings, and develop new ways of knowing that prioritize the lived experience of older adults. Often described as a “walker stalker” Paula’s mobility research has her following (and sometimes chasing) older adults to observe them in their everyday environment.
As an educator interested in supporting student wellness and academic success, Paula also leads a program of research aimed at promoting positive mental health among university students. The purpose of The Mindfulness Experiment is to explore the impact of in-class mediation practice on students, faculty and the classroom environment. Future work in this area will expand beyond individual classrooms to research and implement practices that foster ‘contemplative campuses’.
Paula is an Associate Professor in the Department of Health Sciences at Brock University where she has been recognized as an outstanding educator receiving three awards: the Brock University Award for Excellence in Teaching for Early Career Faculty, Brock University Chancellors Chair for Teaching Excellence, and most recently, the Faculty of Applied Health Sciences Award for Excellence in Teaching.
