Writing Support

The Office of English Language and Writing Support (ELWS)

The Office of English Language and Writing Support (ELWS), School of Graduate Studies, University of Toronto is a great resource for graduate students who are looking to improve their academic writing and speaking. ELWS offers free non-credit courses for native and non-native speakers of English. Topics include: writing thesis or grant proposals; becoming a better editor of your own work; academic writing: focus on grammar or style; and so on. Interested students can find course descriptions and registration instructions on the ELWS website. Please note: The courses fill quickly, so register early to avoid disappointment.

Graduate Centre for Academic Communication (GCAC)

“GCAC provides graduate students with advanced training in academic writing and speaking. GCAC offers five types of support designed to target the needs of both native and non-native speakers of English: non-credit courses, single-session workshops, individual writing consultations, writing intensives, and a list of additional resources for academic writing and speaking. All of GCAC’s programs are free. While the workshops function on a drop-in basis, writing centre consultations require an appointment, and courses and writing intensives require registration.” – GCAC
