The Social and Behavioural Health Sciences Division at the DLSPH is pleased to host Dr. Dorothy E. Smith for this special lecture. For over 40 years, Dr. Dorothy E. Smith has produced compelling scholarly works that simultaneously challenge and deepen our understanding of how to investigate the social organization of everyday life. Her work continues to inspire researchers both in Canada and globally, including diverse researchers in the field of public health who apply the alternative research strategy she developed called Institutional Ethnography.
Dr. Dorothy E. Smith worked for 25 years at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education, retiring in in 2005. She continued teaching as an Adjunct Professor in Sociology at the University of Victoria until 2012. Some of her best known works included: The Everyday World as Problematic: a feminist sociology (1987), Conceptual Practices of Power: a feminist sociology of knowledge (1990), and Institutional Ethnography: a sociology for people (2005).
