DLSPH Announces Dr. Sarah Elton as Inaugural Eakin Chair

June 4, 2024 by ccqhrAdmin

CQ is very pleased to share that Dr. Sarah Elton has been named the inaugural Eakin Chair in Critical Qualitative Health Research Methodology. Dr. Elton joins CQ and the Division of Social and Behavioural Health Sciences at the Dalla Lana School of Public Health (DLSPH) as an Assistant Professor and Chair.

Dr. Elton’s new role is one of two permanent chair positions made possible by a generous donation from Joan Eakin and Chris Hoffmann, matched by DLSPH, in 2022.

Congratulations Dr. Elton!

Read the message from DLSPH Dean Dr. Adalsteinn Brown and Associate Dean Dr. Carol Strike:

We are delighted to announce that a new faculty member, Assistant Professor Sarah Elton, will be joining us in July, in Public Health Sciences (PHS) at the Dalla Lana School of Public Health (DLSPH). She will hold the Eakin Chair in Critical Qualitative Health Research Methodology.

Professor Elton is joining us from Toronto Metropolitan University, where she worked as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Sociology and was founding Director of the Food Health Ecosystems Lab.

She obtained her PhD in Social and Behavioural Health Sciences at DLSPH, and her Master of Arts in Political Science at U of T. She has been an Academic Fellow at the Centre for Critical Qualitative Health Research at U of T.

Professor Elton was the first qualitative health researcher to be recognized by the Gairdner Foundation with an inaugural Early Career Investigator Award in 2021. Her research program has been funded by several government grants and her scholarly articles have been published in numerous journals including Social Science and Medicine, Critical Public Health, Environmental Humanities and the Canadian Journal of Public Health. She also presents regularly at conferences and symposia.

“As someone who researches at the intersection of ecosystems, food systems, and health, using critical qualitative research methodologies, the School of Public Health presents many opportunities,” she said. “I look forward to engaging with colleagues and students at the Centre for Critical Qualitative Health Research, which is a leader in this area. Critical qualitative health research is key to deepening our understanding of human health and well-being during this time of extreme complexity.”

Please join us in welcoming Sarah to her new role at DLSPH. “
